Named after the famous British Army Officer at the Seige of Khartoum, The General Gordon Hotel was first established in 1932 opposite Sydenham train station.
White & Partners purchased the venue for $18M in 2017 with JDA Hotels as the operator, promptly undertaking a $4M renovation to refresh the bar, gaming room, and add a new bistro and beer garden.
With the renovation well underway, an unexpected fire gutted the 1930’s art deco building originally designed by Sidney Warden. With extensive damage to the venue, White & Partners persevered, thoroughly restoring the scorched facade and rebuilding the collapsed roof and structural walls.
Led by Anthony Vavayis, AVA Architects were brought on board to redesign the historic pub, creating a family-friendly venue that pays respect to the original venue. As such, tiles recovered from the 2018 fire were sent and recreated in England using a similar manufacturing method. Charred wood from the fire was also incorporated in the design of the front and back bar.
After a tumultuous three-year renovation, The General Gordon Hotel triumphantly re-opened on the 26th of February with JDA Hotels officially purchasing the venue from White & Partners.

AVA Architects entrusted Identity Furniture to produce 299 custom pieces of eclectic furniture featuring brass finishes, tiled tabletops, and energetic upholstery.
