The Balaclava Hotel, established in 1869 as the Carlisle Hotel, has a long history as a traditional working-class pub. John Frederick Gibbins designed the iconic building which has stood since 1887 and features the name of the original publican on the facade.
The hotel has undergone numerous refurbishments over the last century, and publicans too. The current owners, the ALH Group, entrusted Carter Design to manage the newest fit-out featuring a new bar, bistro, and rooftop bar. The refurbishment, which pays tribute to the working class history of the venue, was largely designed in an industrial style. The design features exposed brick and steel, stained hardwood, satin black finishes, and tan upholstery.
As guests enter the new Balaclava Hotel, they are greeted by a large central bar, a well-spaced bistro, and an inviting rooftop bar hosting up to 120 guests. Locals have praised the hotel’s new image as having ‘the old feel, but a classier, clean and fresh style’.
